Client Air Show Pilot: Mike Harris
THE KNIFE EDGE SPIN UP
AEROBATIC MANEUVER
Category (Basic, Advanced or Extreme): Advanced

What's Happening? In this video clip the Fighter Combat pilot Paul BJ Ransbury demonstrates then talks the client (Mike) through the entry and recovery of this particular advanced aerobatic maneuver last Friday, 4 March 2005.

The Knife Edge Spin Up is a fun maneuver that puts the aircraft into a spin going UP while rotating around the wing-line of the aircraft in knife-edge flight. The typical entry uses a minimum of 160kts in level with about a 4 or 5 G pull to the vertical up-line. When the up-line has been achieved, the pilot immediately initiates a slight left roll followed by full left rudder blended with full forward stick. When looking left down the wing-line (i.e. towards with ground) the occupants can see a corkscrew shaped column of smoke following them up. Transitioning one's view straight ahead reveals that the aircraft is in knife edge flight going through the air in the direction of the occupant's right shoulder. When the rotational energy subsides the aircraft rolls left under torque to an inverted accelerated flat spin condition as the nose yaw-transitions to the pure vertical down line. Once established on the down-line the pilot recovers from the spin condition and continues rolling on the down-line for showmanship. Come watch Mike and BJ have some fun with the Knife Edge Spin Up maneuver! :)

Important Note: Without exception, all mission profiles are "challenge by choice" at Fighter Combat International. We will not put anyone through any maneuver without their expressed permission and expressed desire to do so. Each mission profile follows a building block approach from basic maneuvers working towards the client's self-determined limitations. The customer chooses, at each stage of the building block process, whether to keep it basic and gentle or to move progressively towards the extreme.
